The Upper Verde River Canyon provides a pleasant riverside experience for customers aboard the
Verde Canyon Railroad, the only manmade access along the transverse drainage. Located 18 km
northwest of Cottonwood, Arizona, Upper Verde River Canyon exposes mainly Paleozoic sedimentary
rocks and Tertiary basalts. The transverse drainage travels 12 miles across the Antelope
Hills flowing from the northwest to the southeast. The canyon width averages roughly 1 km. As an application of their criteria-based methodology for determining the mechanism of transverse drainage development, Douglass, et al. (2009) determined antecedence as the mechanism for transverse drainage through the Upper Verde River Canyon.
