Nighthawk
Nighthawk, a gold mining town and lumber with a population at its height of one hundred, took its name from that adopted by the mining district. it was platted by E. L. Rogers in 1896 on the east bank of the South Platte River near the mouth of Pine Creek. Three hundred feet southeast of this marker a hotel, post office, general store, livery stable and blacksmith shop were located. Two newspapers were published in the settlement, the “Mountain Echo,” from 1867 to 1899, and the “West Creek Mining News,” from 1898 to 1903. Travelers arrived by wagon and stagecoach until the Colorado and Southern Railway built a narrow gauge road to Twin Cedars lodge in 1904. The line was abandoned in 1916.
