  Manzanar.
Manzanar, on U. S. Highway 395 south of Lone Pine, was an one of ten internment camps where 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry were sent to live during World War II. Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston's 1973 book, Farewell to Manzanar, is a very readable account of one young woman's experience there.
