History: Named for Maria Wood, cousin of Meriwether Lewis. A proposal to change the name Marias River to Maria River was submitted in Februrary 1998; in September 1999, the USBGN rejected the proposal based on the long-time local use of the current name. Description: 210 miles long. Heads at the confluence of Two Medicine River and Cut Bank Creek 20 km (12.4 mi) N of the community of Valier, flows E through Lake Elwell, then SE to join the Missouri River 1.6 km (1 mi) SE of the community of Loma, 33 km (21 mi) downstream from Fort Benton.


Elevation: 2559ft, 780m.
