"We bones here, for yours await"

Photographed 5 January 2020.

Chapel of Bones

Built in the first half of the 17th century, as an extension of the Chapter House of the convent of São Francisco, the Chapel of the Bones is an invitation to reflect on the transitory nature of the human condition, summarised in the words above its entrance:

WE BONES HERE, FOR YOURS AWAIT.
The decoration of the ceiling, dating from 1810 and full of symbols, allegories and quotations from the Holy Scriptures, adds the affirmation of another Life in the splendor of the glory of God.
At the back of the chapel is the 18th-century tomb chest of the founders of the Convent (13th century) and the floor tomb of Bishop Jacinto Carlos da Silveira, who died during the invasion of Évora by French troops, on 29 July 1808.

Graveyard of the Anchors.

Photographed 1 April 2018.

Portugal’s Cemitério das Âncoras, or “Anchor Graveyard”, sprawls across the shifting sand dunes of Barril Beach on Tavira Island. Lined up on edge with near-military precision, hundreds of rusted anchors memorialize southern Portugal’s long-lost tuna fishery and the generations of fisher-folk whose livelihoods vanished along with the fish.
