When I first read the field notes of Annie Alexander and Louise Kellogg, I was fascinated by the descriptions they wrote about the places they went and the plants and animals they found there. By publishing my field notes on the Internet I hope to follow a little bit in their tradition.

Coll. No. 2509, Physaria vitulifera bellii
My collection number 2509 is Physaria vitulifera or possibly P. vitulifera bellii (commonly designated Physaria 1 in current Colorado literature). The hybrid has intermediate characters between the two cogeners (Kothera, et al., 2007) Two characters that are typically compared are: 1. Shape of the basal leaves, and 2. Depths of the basal and apical sinuses of the fruit. Characters below are primarily based on O'Kane (2010).

1. Shape of the basal leaves.

The basal leaves of Physaria bellii are broadly ovate with shallowly dentate margins.

The basal leaves of Physaria vitulifera have a pandurate (fiddle-shaped) or obovate blade with margins that are usually deeply and broadly incised. Rydbergs (1895) holotype, an image of which is available online (https://swbiodiversity.org/seinet/collections/individual/index.php?occid=2774659), has strongly fiddle-shaped leaves that are deeply incised.

For my collection number 2509, the leaves are rarely pandurate (fiddle-shaped), i.e., only two could be described that way. Otherwise, nearly all the basal leaves are obovate with margins that are shallowly dentate rather than deeply and broadly incised.

2. Depths of the basal and apical sinus.

Physaria bellii fruits have narrow, deep apical and basal sinuses.

Physaria vitulifera fruits have an obtuse or truncate base, and a broad, open, and deep apical sinus.

For my collection 2509, only the youngest fruit is obtuse at the base. For mature fruit, the basal sinus is clearly present, though smaller than the apical sinus. The mean depth of the basal sinus is 1.06 mm., whereas the mean depth of the apical sinus is 1.94 mm. (n=17). Therefore, the base of the fruit cannot be described as either obtuse or truncate. Broad and open is an apt description for many of the apical sinuses, though.

At least two of the characters of Coll. No. 2509 are intermediate between P. bellii and P. vitulifiera and it is therefore likely that this collection is the hybrid between the two, Physaria ×1.
